“Keynote Speaker” and “Guest of Honour” – (ICACTA 2020)

Dr Amr Ahmed, HoS of Computer Science (UNM), was invited as “Keynote Speaker” and “Guest of Honour” to the “International Conference on Advanced Computing Techniques and Applications (ICACTA 2020)” on 5th and 6th March 2020. The conference was held in Bangalore, India, and was organised and hosted by the Reva University. Amr initially delivered a short inaugural speech and then a full keynote speaker, which included an overview of research in the school of Computer Science (UNM). During the inaugural session, Amr was treated with the traditional “Mahraja” hat and robe, as in the photo, which is traditional in Bangalore, India. Amr had various discussions with the organisers and other guests who expressed interest in research collaboration.

Guest Speaker: Dr Dave Towe “Testing the Untestable”

We had an interesting research presentation on “Metamorphic Testing: Testing the untestable”. Thanks to Dr Dave Towe. It was a really interesting and enjoyable presentation, even for those who are not particularly interested in software engineering. Dave managed to get all attendees engaged and encouraged us all. Well done Dave.

Dr Dave Towe (from our Nottingham Ningbo, China campus) visited us (at Nottingham Malaysia, UNM) and we had fruitful discussions on mutually beneficial topics. Dr Towe is the Deputy Head of School and Director of Teaching, school of Computer Science, University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China. This was his first visit to UNM, and we are looking forward for more visits both ways.

Annual Academic Away Days (UK, 3 Campuses)

Dr Amr Ahmed (Head of School) attended the Annual Academic Away Days in the UK. He presented the progress and plans of the School of Computer Science (Malaysia), including Teaching and Research.

This is an annual event where representatives from the 3 campuses (UK, China, and Malaysia) meet together and discuss various teaching and research matters across the 3 campuses. It also include meetings between the heads of schools from the 3 campuses to catch up on the overall school strategies and operations.

Field Trip to PetroSains, KL

Another interesting Field Trip was offered to our 2nd yr students, hosted by PetroSains, KL.

A group of students, particularly studying HCI (Human Computer Interaction) modules, from the School of Computer Science, University of Nottingham Malaysia, visited the PetroSains (Science Museum) at Kuala Lumpur. PetroSains has invited and hosted the group for the day, where students explored and inspected the various displays with the aim of taking case studies to improve interaction designs.

The groups was led by Dr Marina Ng, the module convenor and an HCI expert, and accompanied by Dr Amr Ahmed (Head of School). Discussions with the PetroSains team was very useful and resulted on PetroSains funding the students projects and a further invitation to visit the museum again (fully funded by PetroSains) to present their designs there.

More details of the visit can be found here .

Trip to “AirAsia” HQ – part of our “CS Week”

Today, as part of our CS Week, we took a group of Computer Science students (mix of Y3, Y2 and Y1) on a field trip to  AirAsia HQ  (also known as “RedQ“). They had a tour around the amazing working space, enjoyed the slides (2-story height) and met with key staff; Head of SW Engineering and Head of Data Science.

It has been a useful as well as enjoyable trip, and hopefully fruitful.

Tea and Refreshments  were served and group photos captured before departing.

Thanks to the good hospitality from “AirAsia” staff, and for the organizing members from the university.
